MILWAUKEE TENNIS CLASSIC CONTINUES PARTNERSHIP
The Milwaukee Tennis Classic, since 2017 as noted in this program, continues its proud, patriotic tradition of providing wild cards to the tournament to two men and two women members of the U.S. Naval Academy tennis team. Those midshipmen have distinguished themselves competing in the MTC; and, several have won the annual MTC Sportsmanship Award including Thomas J. Pecor (2016), Emily Tannenbaum (2022) and Sasya Panyan (2022).
In 2018, MTC president Chas Mulcahy, sensing the opportunity for USNA tennis to expand westward, proposed an event co-sponsored by the Academy and the University of San Diego to be hosted in the new USD Hogan Tennis Center.
From the beginning, USNA Alumni Association San Diego Chapter has been an active supporter providing financial support and encouraging multiple USNA alumni and retirees in the US Navy in San Diego to become involved. USD men’s tennis coach, Ryan Keckley, and USNA tennis coach, John Moreland, played key roles in forming the San Diego Veterans Tennis Classic (SDVTC). In 2022, Keckley and Moreland were presented with the SDVTC Admiral Chester Nimitz – General Douglas MacArthur Leadership Award.
Continuing to build on the past extensive experience of MTC, combined with the prominent and nationally ranked USD tennis program with its new tennis complex along with highly competitive USNA tennis and the strong Navy presence in the San Diego area, SDVTC will present its third version on October 13-15, 2023 at USD.
In addition to USD and USNA teams, the 2023 competition will include the Boise State and Pepperdine men’s teams; and, the Loyola Marymount and University of Denver women’s teams.
The event will also include a special program with the San Diego Wounded Warriors Tennis Program and a program with youth from underserved areas.
SDVTC is pleased to inspire patriotism with this event recognizing that San Diego is a Navy town and has a proud military history.
